During extremely cold weather or winter storms, staying warm and safe can be a challenge. Winter storms can bring freezing temperatures, power outages, disrupted communication services, and hazardous icy roads. To keep yourself and your loved ones safe, it’s important to prepare your home and vehicle before a storm arrives.

Here are Winter Safety Tips to help protect you and others all winter long: Preparing for a Winter Storm | Winter Weather | CDC

Prepare Your Home

Make a Plan

  • Create a family communication and emergency plan before winter storms hit.

Weatherproof Your Home

  • Insulate water lines along exterior walls.

  • Caulk and weather-strip doors and windows.

  • Insulate walls and attic.

  • Install storm windows or cover windows with plastic.

  • Repair roof leaks and trim branches that could fall.

Heating & Safety

  • Have your chimney or flue inspected yearly if using a fireplace or wood stove.

  • Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors; test monthly.

  • Keep a multipurpose fire extinguisher nearby.

  • Ensure all fuel-burning equipment vents outside.

  • Have your furnace checked by a qualified technician each winter.

For Older Adults

  • Keep an easy-to-read indoor thermometer visible.

  • Adults 65+ may not feel cold as easily; monitor home temperature often.

Prepare Your Car

Vehicle Maintenance

  • Service your vehicle as recommended.

  • Each fall: check antifreeze, replace wiper fluid with winter mix, and inspect tires for tread and pressure.

  • Keep your gas tank near full to prevent fuel line freeze.

  • Check heater, defroster, brakes, ignition, exhaust, oil, and battery.
